ALIM

This is a year 6 ALIM group from Glenbrae School. ALIM stands for Accelerated Learning in Mathematics. Their blogspots are: gbskerisimasis.blogspot.co.nz, gbsedwinaf.blogspot.co.nz,
gbslaylaf.blogspot.co.nz, gbssialem.blogspot.co.nz, gbsnunian.blogspot.co.nz, and gbschanels.blogspot.co.nz.

In week 1 we were tested to see what stage we were at in Mathematics. We were all at early Stage 5.

In week 2 we learnt to add by splitting  into parts to make tens, such as 28 + 3 is the same as
28 + 2 = 30 + 1 = 31.
In week 3 we learnt to add by splitting numbers into parts instead of counting on eg. 8 + 6 is the same as 8 + 2 = 10 + 4 = 14, the 6 was split into 2 and 4.
-->

In week 4 we learnt to subtract by splitting numbers into parts instead of counting back eg. 14 - 6 is the same as 14 - 4 = 10 - 2 = 8, the 6 was split into 2 and 4.

In Week 5 for ALIM we learnt to add two-digit numbers where the sum of the ones digit is less than ten. eg.34 + 23 is the same as 3 groups of 10 + 2 groups of 10 = 50 and 4 + 3 = 7 so 50 + 7 = 57.
In Week 6 for ALIM we learnt to subtract two-digit numbers that do not involve renaming eg. 45 - 21 is the same as 4tens - 2 tens = 20 and 5 ones - 1 ones = 4 = 24.
In Week 7 for ALIM we learnt to find other ways to solve problems like 5 + 5 + 5 that is the same as 5  X 3 = 15.

In Week 8 for ALIM we learnt to work out multiplication from what we know about 2's, 5's and 10's like 7 X 2 is the same as 5 X 2 = 10 and 2 X 2 = 4 that is equal to 10 + 4 = 14.
 In Week 9 for ALIM we learnt to solve problems by making equal sets like 10 coins shared between 2 pirates  is the same as 10 divided by 2 = 5.
In week 10 we were re-tested. It was great to see that most of us moved to stage 6 or late stage 5 in our strategy stage. Doing ALiM has definitely helped us to improve in our Mathematics.

I think that it is great that you are learning your maths and sharing your ways of working maths out.We also have an ALiM group in our class.

Great Work -you look like you now all understand adding to make the nearest 10.
Well done from Mrs Greenham

Hi Room 8, Glenbrae School
I teach the ALiM programme at Arrowtown School and I'm just starting up a blog this year. I have two Year 7 groups at the moment. I love your blog and feel very inspired to follow your great lead. I like how you have showed the progression in your learning week by week. Keep up the fabulous work. I look forward to being a regular follower of your blog.
